About Brasília

Only two capital cities in the world have been able to apply the principles of town planning that the Athens Charter or the "Maničre de penser l'Urbanisme" by Le Corbusier had proposed for the 20th century.

These cities were: Chandigarh, capital of the Punjab, in 1950, and Brasília, built from scratch in 1960, in record time (four years), smack in the middle of 5814 square kilometers of federal territory to become de federal capital of Brazil.

To build a capital city in the deserted center of the country had always been a Brazilian dream, but it was only after pressure from Juscelino Kubitschek, elected President in 1955, that such a daring and imposing project became reality.

The nerve center of all administrative and political decisions lie today in this futuristic city, built to symbolize Brazil's unity and modernity - the famous "Corner Stone" of the Brazilian continent.
